We managed several more info dumps that evening.

1) That we were worried Daglan Straklant might go to the Axis and offer to hand over his evidence of a high-ranking traitor in exchange for his freedom and possible reinstatement – and that 2) he’d only told me about the possibility of the offensive being sabotaged as a form of torture so it’d hurt when it failed; he really did hate me more than the Axis. He didn’t actually want my help at all.

3) That the guy he had evidence against was so high up in the Axis organisation that Straklant wouldn’t be likely to trust his information with anyone other then the Imperator himself (we thought that would definitely put the cat among the pigeons).

4) That Straklant suspected that the traitor not only intended to sabotage the entire operation, but also to assassinate the Imperator.

5) That none of us had a clue who the traitor was (covering our backs there – didn’t want to be dragged off for questioning).

We added that second one because I was a bit worried that the motivations of both myself and Straklant wouldn’t stand up to close examination – I mean, they’re still pretty wafer thin, not to mention inconsistent, but I did come up with the plan very quickly and, basically, it’s our best and possibly only shot and there wasn’t time to fine tune it.

I don’t know if anything will come of it. After all, chances are Gripper doesn’t have any contact with her Axis bosses.

But as I lay in bed I couldn’t help but think of the scenario…

Gripper running hastily to her Asek contact; panic spreading through the ranks of the Axis, all the way to the Imperator himself… Straklant dragged off and tortured – revealing nothing, but they cancel the attacks anyway just to make sure… The Imperator trusting no one and the whole structure crumbling… Straklant being tortured again and they don’t believe he doesn’t know anything so they keep torturing him…

Maybe this night I’d have pleasant dreams for once.

As a matter of fact I did, for a while. I was back on the Braxiatel Collection, lying by the lake in the sun with Jason’s arms around me, and my child was playing on the grass with Wolsey. Idyllic, and to be honest quite surprising when I think of my recent relationship with Jason. And, indeed, with the sun. Strangely, I could see my child clearly in my dream, but when I woke up the picture faded away before I could grasp even the slightest detail of it. And strangest of all, at the end of my dream, just before I awoke with a shiver, it all changed tone and we were menaced by a house-sized hamster… now what was that saying about my psyche?

And suddenly, I realised exactly what it was saying.

You know how I said I was going to start being suspicious again? Well, it was back with a vengeance. A really unpleasant vengeance.

It was the middle of the night.
